Interior Details Of An Elevator

Thinking About The Details, BROTHER!

No. This is not Hulk Hogan, it’s still me.

A 20 or 30 minute class discussion during my 2nd year of university had a big role in how I began looking and thinking about the details in design. I don’t know if any of the other uni-maniacs I went to university with remember this or not, but it’s something which, even though so small over a 3 year course, I’ve never forgot.

The design of an elevator (or lift - whatever you want to call it. I’ll just keep calling it elevator for simplicity), was brought up by our tutor Mean Gene... I mean, Jon 😜 at the beginning of a hotel design module (even though we never even had to design an elevator as part of the project, it was just the rooms 🤨). Anyway, Jon began to ask us about what we’d do if we had to design a small space like an elevator and told us to consider just how many design decisions need to be made, even in a small space like this.

He began talking about the floor covering, “what’s the material? What’s the colour?”. Then he moved onto the walls asking the same again but adding “how do the floor and the walls relate to each other?”. Next was the lighting, and then the buttons in the elevator “what font?”, “what colour?”, “how big?”, “button shape?”, “material?”, “do the buttons light up?” etc. He was asking most of these rhetorically, but the idea was to get us thinking about how, firstly, everything is designed and needs attention and, secondly, how all these details work together.

This small 20/30 minute elevator analogy has certainly helped me, and I take this level of thinking into every project I work on.
