The Meaning Behind The Rokusho Wallpaper Collection.

Everything has a reason, doesn’t it?

That’s definitely the case for everything I design. So, why the name Rokusho?

I began by wanting to use the colours of metals, rusts, and patina as my colour inspiration. Once I researched and decided upon a number of different colourways that fit this ‘theme’, I wanted a good name but something a bit abstract. I wasn’t digging using the name ‘patina’ as I thought it pigeonholed the designs (plus it didn’t sound that good 😂) - my idea was that even though the colours are based on different patinas, I wanted the designs to be flexible enough to potentially be used anywhere for their look and colours, and not just necessarily anywhere where ‘patina’ fit the style (like an industrial interior for example). Does that make sense?

Ok, so obviously I was now on the hunt for a cool name but based on patina. This led me to translating the word patina/patinas in a number of different languages that I think always have great sounding/looking words. When I came across the Japanese translation of patinas (Rokusho) it just looked, sounded and felt right at the same time. Plus, as the Rokusho wallpaper designs also have an element of Wabi-Sabi about them, the whole Japanese influence was perfectly falling into place.

By the way, I spent some time actually cross referencing the translation, and repeatedly discovered that ‘Rokusho’ does have translative roots to the words patina/patinas. My version of Rokusho is pronounced Rock-Ush-O (if that helps 🤷🏻‍♂️😂).

* In an update to this story, I came across a paper (which is now used to print the Rokusho designs on. Shown below using the Ishi colourway) which has a slight textured roughness to it, fitting the idea of patina perfectly (whether a scratched metal, an old wood grain, or worn leather etc.). You'd need to feel it for yourself really to fully  understand.

So now you know the reason behind the name, the colours, and how to pronounce it - you just have to tell everyone about the story & designs, and become part of the story too.
