The Story Of My Logo Design.

15/4/2019

I get asked a lot about my logo and if there’s any meaning behind it. Well, yes, there is, but if I stood there and told you the story of it, it’d be like the scene from one of the Airplane! comedy films by the time I’d finished (an old reference, if you know, then you know).

So I’ll waffle about it on here instead 🤪.

Initial Hand Drawn Logo Ideas
These 2 sheets are where it all began. Originally I was talking about starting an interior design business with a lad I worked with, and was trying to use our surname initials ‘E’ and ‘P’ with a ‘D’ (for ‘design’). I seemed to like a round logo and trying to be a bit creative with the use of the letters. This never came to anything as the other lad got a job in London, so I decided to have a go at doing a logo for myself which I planned on hopefully coming back to one day.

At this point I began looking into logo design and the psychology behind iconic logos, just out of interest really, and decided that I wanted mine to have a real meaning to me but in a way which is not obvious when looking at it. I liked the way I’d done the ‘E’ on the logos on the top sheet so I wanted to keep that in my new logo and use my initials (if I could have thought up a really good brand name rather than using my name I would have done). This curvy ‘E’ looked like a number 3, and I thought about the project I was working on when I was talking about starting a business with that other lad, and the project folder number was 037. Straight away it clicked that I could do an ‘L’ like a number 7 and have the ‘E’ like a number 3 and use my own initials in my logo and give them the abstract meaning I wanted. I wasn’t sure where the ‘0’ from 037 fit at first, until I made it the main body of the logo and linked the ‘L’ and ‘E’ together and put them inside it.

So, at this stage I had a very basic idea for a logo that had personal abstract meaning behind it, but for now the idea of staring my own business was put to the back of my mind whilst I went to build up experiences elsewhere.

Our First Logo Design

Fast forward a number of years and even though I still didn’t feel completely ready to start up on my own, I went back to the logo to just see what it would look like if a designed it in photoshop with some colour added to it (I had to make the ‘L’ myself). The idea was to have it fairly neutral but with something that makes it stand out. I decided to have the logo light grey on a white background and trim it with gold. I wanted to have the text in the logo so people knew what the business was, after trying loads of different ways I settled on just having the words next to the logo. Again, I let this logo sit whilst I was doing other things, but eventually when I decided to start this is the logo I used.

Our Current White And Gold Logo

The current logo. I had the previous logo for about 2 and a half years and looked at it one day and thought “this grey colour isn’t doing it for me”. I wanted my logo to be simplified but detailed at the same time, plus I wanted it to really stand out. The gold on the previous version didn’t stand out like I wanted, but I wanted to keep gold in my logo (it’s a rich and powerful colour, which portrays quality), so I made the decision to just have white and gold (let me tell you, gold as a flat colour is not easy to get right my friends!). I was sick of the words just hanging at the side too, so to keep the ‘0’ part of the logo and the simple rounded shape, I experimented with implementing the writing into the shape by curving it (I kept parts of the original ‘0’ either side to help keep the roundness established and because I wanted to have the writing fairly central, which makes the actual ‘0’ even more abstract - which I like). I added the two balls/circles (whatever you want to call them) at the sides to separate the writing and establish a kind of top and bottom, and to also anchor the logo. They also remind me of the ‘yin yang’ logo which is also about balance.

So that’s it compadres. Now you know the long, deep rooted meaning of my logo. My logo is something i’ve always felt I’ve had to do myself (even though by no means I’m any sort of logo designer). It’s a personal thing and a reminder for me of where this all began.
